Many of us have that one dark room in our houses that could do with a real brighten up. Whether this is because it lacks natural light or if it is the size of a matchbox there is always a solution. These solutions do not have to be expensive and you do not have to redecorate the entire room. Below are some tips on brightening up a room – even just applying one of these tips to your dark room will make a huge difference!

The most obvious solution is to maximise the amount of light that enters a room. If you have a good source of natural light then make the most of this – pull curtains open and roll blinds up completely so no part of a window is blocked. If the room lacks natural light then utilise various lighting options to make up for this. Placing an item such as floor standing lights in a corner, or in a couple corners, of a room will make a big difference. This is because this form of lighting diffuses light evenly and lights up the entire room due to its height. Another option is to place touch table lamps on side tables or cabinets as these are softer forms of lighting. You can vary the brightness of light you want to be released by choosing a low or high watt bulb.

Mirrors are a great way of creating the illusion of space. They work well in small rooms and also help reflect light around a room. Placing a big mirror on one wall will instantly make a room look bigger, especially if you have a big lighting fixture that the mirror can reflect. If you don’t have great lighting in a room and not very much space why not place some small fairy lights either around a mirror or nicely draped across a wall.

Some rooms are incredibly dark because of the colour of the walls. In the modern day it is seen as stylish to paint walls one of various colours from gold to chocolate brown. Although this may look good, a small room will look even smaller with dark walls. When decorating use light coloured wallpaper or paint. If you have a small budget why not just paint one of the walls a lighter colour to open up the room. This can work very successfully in brightening up a dull room.
