The latest research indicates that promotional goods have a similar effect on the brain as porn. The Institute of Promotional Marketing (IPM) measured the responses of 50 participants to goods that were with or without promotions. These reactions were measured by eye movement and pupil dilation. The results indicated that valid promotional marketing can achieve the same response that is connected to pornography.
This indicates the importance of promotional marketing and the reactions and responses it can activate. Giving potential customers premium promotional goods will increase brand awareness and also be something that each potential customer may use; giving them a continual reminder of your brand. There are a number of promotional gifts any company can give such as: pens, note pads, paperweights, USB sticks and coasters.
The occurring problem for many merchandisers is gaining the much desired desk space by these potential customers. There are thousands of companies offering items from the list mentioned above, so it is imperative to make sure yours stands out from competitors. Your promotional good should have something that makes it unique and this should be emphasised. For example, if it is a recycled pen then ensure the recycled fact is visible. Another approach is to give a high quality gift – handing out fountain pens instead of biros may be more costly but the fountain pen will 90% of the time be chosen over the biro to be used.
Paperweights are a common desk item that is overlooked. They are in fact useful and a great promotional tool. Glass engraving, these paperweights with your brands logo and/or name and sending them out to potential customers is a good idea. But a great idea is to create personalized paperweights, incorporating your brand and your potential customer’s brand. This will include them in the product and encourage them to use the paperweight as it promotes them self also. After all, who doesn’t like some free marketing?
You can also play around with the senses such as smell and touch. Why not get some promotional merchandise created, such as key rings, but make them different. For example, make the texture unusual like soft velvet or woven rope, or create something luxurious like a glass key ring. These ideas may be costly but why not create fewer higher quality products and send them to targeted customers instead of sending cheap promotional goods to a high volume of generic customers. More often than not this approach has a higher success rate.
